Integrate Math Everyday with Count 10, Read 10!

Society is clear on the value of literacy – it is desired, sought after and cherished. Numeracy, on the other hand, is not. It is politically correct and even stylish to claim to be bad at math.

The mindset of the public must change. Mathematics must be viewed in a favorable, and even desirable light. People should be embarrassed that they can’t “do” math, not proud. People should seek out numeracy.

The message that everyone already does math and that it used, valuable and okay to like and do needs to be known.

It begins with habit and turns into passion.

And like all good habits, it begins small.

Split the 20 Minute Reading Routine

Count 10 Read 10 is an initiative to get parents to integrate counting and math into their daily activities. Instead of reading for 20 minutes before bed, split your routine up. Count for ten minutes then read for ten minutes.

Or do 10 minutes in the car, at the dinner table or in the bath. Counting, patterns, logic and number fun can be done anywhere!

Great question. To answer this, and incorporate variety and fun into the activity, I’ve established the link-up, below. I’ll be posting my ideas and I hope you’ll post yours!

All links have the following qualities:

  • It’s something grownups can do with children.
  • It can be done in bed, in the car, in the bath or just about anywhere.
  • It isn’t constrained by needing a lot of fancy tools or equipment.
  • It plays with math, logic, reasoning, deduction or patterns.
  • It can be completed or paused in a short amount of time.
  • It has a positive tone.
  • I either have tried it or am willing to try it on Daughter.
