Meanings & Definitions

Perform the indicated operations – add these if the symbol is +, subtract if the symbol is -, etc.

Combining like terms – add up (or subtract) the pieces that match

Eliminate grouping symbols – get rid of parenthesis (legally). It likely means to distribute a number “across” the bits in the parenthesis.

Collect all like terms – aka combine like terms

Is 7 a solution to the equation ___________? – plug in 7 for the variable and do the math. If both sides are equal, the answer is yes.

Translate to an equation, solve this equation, and answer the question. – Figure this word problem out and give an answer.

Write as a unit rate – the answer is something like 52 inches/hour or 78.3 feet/minute or 12.72 miles/hour. It’s a number with a something-per-something.

Perimeter – the distance around a figure.

Circumference – the distance around a circle (i.e. the perimeter of a circle)

Area – the amount of carpet it would take to cover a figure. The answer has something like square feet or square inches or square something at the end.

Volume – the amount of water that you could put into a box or container of some type. The answer has cubic inches, cubic feet or some other cubic something at the end.
